The seriousness of the challenge which our country needs to face is best demonstrated by numbers. Thanks to the national coal resources, we are one of the most energy-independent countries in Europe. The energy dependency ratio in Poland is only about 25 percent. In comparison, in France it is about 50 percent, and in Germany 63 percent. At the same time nearly 60 percent Polish power plants are over 30 years old, which means that they already need to look for innovative solutions that will allow them to meet stringent European requirements. To meet these challenges, Megmar has developed groundbreaking solutions in the field of flue gas desulphurisation technology and maintenance of power boilers. They are a response to the greatest need of the energy industry which is to increase the efficiency and lifetime of existing coal installations, while reducing the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere. Research carried out in one of the largest Polish power plants at the flue gas desulphurisation installation, confirmed that thanks to the Megmar technology, SO2 emission was not only reduced, but the problem of internal precipitation of hard deposits in the absorber which are difficult to remove and they are in places in contact with the medium (gypsum-lime slurry) has been completely eliminated. On the one hand, thanks to the elimination of hard deposit precipitation in the system, the efficiency of circulators remains high, which results in maintaining high efficiency of flue gas desulfurization. On the other hand, due to the properties of biological - chemical preparations used, they react with the suspension of the absorber and combustion gases, reducing the SO2 emission. Thanks to Megmar technology, the efficiency of flue gas desulfurization has been improved. Planned outages have been significantly reduced and emergency shutdowns of the installations have been eliminated. This is the best example that ecological solutions can go hand in hand with more effective, and at the same time less expensive technologies. Hence, tests of the flue gas desulphurisation installation are currently carried out, which aims to reduce NOx emissions by dosing bio-chemical preparations to absorbers in order to use as much as possible the already built installations and reduce the costs of modernization of facilities.
Biotechnology at the service of ecology

To ensure they are met, the products designed by experts are produced on the basis of properly modified and chemically stabilised bacteria. The Megmar technology used in the processes such as water purification or waste water treatment, is based on the use of the metabolic potential of bacteria and biotransformation. Bacteria biodegrade organic pollutants, including biological pollutants, and by bioassimilation and using reactions such as hydrolysis, reduction and oxidation, dehalogenation and methylation they incorporate compounds containing carbon, nitrogen and sulfur into cellular structures. After selecting the appropriate biological and chemical mixture for a given installation, the use of Megmar technology allows to reduce parameters such as: general organic carbon, chemical demand for COD and biological oxygen demand BOD5. It also allows to lower the content of chlorides, ammonium or heavy metals.
In the interests of water resources Water resources in Poland are among the lowest in Europe and, unfortunately, are showing a downward trend. The largest amount of water is used by industrial enterprises, consuming 76 percent of total consumption for the needs of the economy. In addition, the improper technological management of water systems leads to the occurrence of settling processes within the installation, corrosion, deposition of suspended matter and development of biological life. Thanks to the use of conditioning and stabilising products created by Megmar, it is possible to eliminate these phenomena, remove iron compounds, manganese, sulphides, sulfates, heavy metals precipitation, such as arsenic, zinc or lead. It is also possible to eliminate micro-organisms that form a biofilm, remove potentially pathogenic organisms, and thus save considerable amounts of water. The growing demand for water enforces changes in the entire management system. An important element in this process is also its revitalization, which enables the re-use of wastewater after its treatment using biotechnological methods. This method developed by Megmar involves the elimination of sediments, capture of heavy metals and purification of wastewater to the parameters required by the BAT conclusions. Megmar also possesses the technology used to precipitate residual heavy fuel oil from sewage that is mazut. Sewage generated in the mazut economy is undergoes unconditional cleaning of oily and mechanical parts. This process takes place in the so-called Mazut Trap. However, it is not effective in 100%, hence the idea of creating an innovative product that would allow to clean up sewage to a degree that enables its re-use as industrial water and precipitated mazut. There are numerous entities with strategic importance for energy, refinery and steel policy in Poland and Europe among the regular customers of Megmar. The success achieved by the company has made it a two-time winner of the competition of the International Scientific and Technical Conference „Thermal Power Plants”, in the category of an innovative product for use in the power industry. It also won many awards on the European Union market.
